The Savage Sword of Conan

Vermutlich auch bedingt durch die erfolgreiche Veröffentlichung der Conan-Geschichten von ROBERT E: HOWARD, die Ende der 1960er durch LIN CARTER und L. Sprague de Camp im Buchbereich eine Renaissance erlebten, startete Marvel im Oktober 1970 die Serie "Conan the Barbarian", in der die Marvel-Version von Howards Barbaren sein Comic-Debüt gab.

Nach "CONAN THE BARBARIAN" bekam der Barbar CONAN mit "THE SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN" sein eigenes Comic-Magazin, das im August 1974 startete, und alle zwei Monate erschien. Ab Ende 1977 monatlich.

Ähnlich wie die Marvel-Comic-Serie "CONAN THE BARBARIAN" lief auch das Comic-Magazin "THE SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN" sehr erfolgreich und brachte es auf insgesamt 235 Ausgaben.

Der Fokus des Comic-Magazins lag zwar auf den unterschiedlichsten Comic- Abenteuern mit Conan dem Barbaren, doch in "THE SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN" erschienen auch Geschichten mit RED SONJA, KULL, SOLOMON KANE und BRAN MAK MORN. 

 

Ergänzt wurden die Comicgeschichten durch diverse Artikel zu Conan, Conans Welt usw. usf.

Bereits in der ersten Ausgabe von "THE SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN" war die Schwertkämpferin RED SONJA mit einer eigenen Story vertreten.
Marvel FantasyIm Oktober 1975 erschien in der zweiten Ausgabe mit "THE BEAST OF ABYSS" das erste Comic-Abenteuer mit  KULL von Atlantis.

Nach der Einstellung der Marvel-Comic-Serie "KULL THE CONQUERER"  wurden die Abenteuer mit Kull in "THE SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN" ab Ausgabe 119 (Dezember 1985) fortgesetzt.

Mit "THE RIGHT HAND OF DOOM" folgte in der dreizehnten Ausgabe des Comic-Magazins die erste Geschichte mit SOLOMON KANE, gefolgt von BRAN MAK MORN, der mit dem Zweiteiler "WORMS OF EARTH" in Ausgabe 16 und 17 vertreten war.

Ab der 73. Ausgabe von "THE SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN" erlebte dann auch die Piratin VALERIA mit dem Sechsteiler "ISLAND OF THE PIRATES' DOOM" ihre erstes Abenteuer.

Die Piratin VALERIA gab in der CONAN-Erzählung "RED NAILS" (deutscher Titel: "AUS DEN KATAKOMBEN") von Robert E. Howard ihr Debüt, die von Juli bis Oktober 1936 im Pulp-Magazin "Weird Tales" veröffentlicht wurde..

Im Juli 1995 wurde das Comic-Magazin "THE SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN" nach 235. Ausgaben eingestellt.
